Hello and happy Monday friends! We had an insanely busy weekend over here. I had the pleasure of teaching class all day at Fusion Beads here in Seattle on Saturday which is always so much fun, and then on Sunday morning we left our house bright and early (6:30am) with all three kids in tow and made our way to Church for most of the day to do the music. When we got home yesterday after 3pm I was so pooped and happy that we managed to survive such a full schedule!

I also had the pleasure of meeting some of my new favorite blogger friends, The Ravenna Girls for a cupcake and coffee this weekend. I have had such fun getting to know Brianne and Danielle the past few months in person, they are such a treat! They blessed our kids with some fun hand-me-down bean bag chairs (the kids LOVE them!) and they also gifted me this gorgeous post for this mornings make something monday feature! I am so excited to share it with you it's really adorable!

Good day, friends! It is such a pleasure to have the opportunity to share this space once again, especially as we've gotten to know Rebekah in person in the last couple of months. Friends are such a great blessing, especially those made through such a surprising venue as the internet.

So here we go!

Last fall, we picked up a couple packs of HEAT cork trivets at IKEA and have been hanging onto them to spruce up for the table. I had considered painting, but couldn't quite find the right paint that was good for cork but also heat proof. You don't want your trivet to stick to the bottom of your hot dish, after all. I have heard good thinks about wood burning cork, but I was itching for a little more color.Then, I spotted these coasters on Craft blog and it got my wheels turning. Last weekend we picked up a bag of springy cotton cord at the Goodwill, and the idea for these trivets was born!

I used the smaller of the HEAT cork trivets for these. On one side, mark out your geometric grid using pencil lines and a ruler. For this size, I started 3/4" from the edge, and spaced the grid 1.5 apart.

Since I knew that I would be going through each point several times, I punctured each grid point with a knitting stitch holder just enough to guide the needle. You could also use a bamboo skewer, toothpick, or sturdy needle.

Then its just a matter of threading your needle and experimenting with geometric patterns amongst the grid pattern. I did one in two shades of green in preparation for St. Patty's day, and another getting ready for Easter.

The best part is that you could pull out the string, and re-use for the next holiday, making an inexpensive and easy seasonal craft. Happy Crafting!

If you didn't want to use these on the table top, they would also make cute little message boards:

{Couple small notes: (1) you might notice a switched from a plastic yarn needle to a metal needle halfway through. This is because the cork broke my plastic needle, and I found that the metal needle actually worked better if you can find one with an eye large enough for your string. (2) I first tried drilling the holes, but it was a disaster. You don't need anything nearly that powerful to set your grid}

dinner at eight :: sweetheart

{Dinner at Eight is a special project I am doing with my friend Andi this year - planning date nights at home for our husbands, putting the kids to bed early and being intentional about our marriages! Read more about the dinner at eight project HERE}

This past year I have been learning so much about Gods provision. Not always an easy thing to trust or count on I will confess but always, ALWAYS finds it way into our lives especially when we are looking for it. I love this dinner at eight feature it is very close to my heart but sometimes the thought of putting together a little more effort for a date night at home is hard. After we moved last Fall and I unexpectedly found myself pregnant again I ~~was~~ am tired. I don't always have the enthusiasm to try.

But this I know: God loves marriage and He loves to provide for us and last night I was so blessed by both of those things. A few weeks ago when I said I was bringing dinner at eight back I really was excited I promise but as it got closer pulling off a nice date started to feel so exhausting and on Sunday I still had so much to do.

I needed to go to the store. I had my Pinterest board going for inspiration and a loooong list of things that I wanted to make for the date. But we were out at Church until late afternoon and by the time we got home I just needed to sit my tired body down.

My step Mom, Julia hadn't seen the kids in several weeks and popped by for a little visit and she brought with her a bag of goodies to share. Guess what was in the bag? It was all the makings for the sweetest evening, oh how the Lord provided us such a gift through her!

First she brought me some red tulips to brighten up the place. She packed two rib eye steaks from their grass fed beef stash because she knows we aren't able to afford that kind of treat often and she thought Chris might like it especially. Some potatoes, mushrooms and a salad plus a little plate of veggies and dip for an appetizer. I think I almost cried when she pulled it all out of the bag and laid it on the counter.

That evening after she had gone home I told Chris it was such an unexpected blessing and we both agreed that we could not wait to enjoy the steaks. I then decided to forgo all the over the top decorations and gathered up what I had around the house for the next nights date.

As luck would have it Amanda from Festivities Party Supply had sent me some adorable red and white striped straws and flags (thanks Amanda!) to use for our date night and they provided a little more red to go with the tulips. I also laid out the vintage fifties red roses table cloth (also a gift from Julia long ago it was her Mom's I love it!) and hung up my little xoxo bunting from the talented Stacey Winters etsy shop!

Then I got out my trusty glass jar collection and filled each one with white feathers and a battery operated candle to add a festive glow. So easy and yet so special especially when I set the card table out by the fireplace.

And that was about it. I waited to start dinner until Chris came home last night. Instead I fed the kids and then we both took turns getting them ready for bed and working on our food.

I will be honest Josie went down pretty easily but our boys were NOT even close to sleeping while we enjoyed our meal together. It was pretty comical listening to them rough housing and carrying on. At one point we heard a terrible loud crash and lots of crying and my heart stopped but all ended up fine. And they did eventually go to bed. But to be honest it wasn't even a big deal they knew we were having some alone time and even though they kept interrupting us it still felt really really special to get some good adult conversation mixed in. And the food was super yummy too!

We enjoyed Chris' favorite milk shakes in these sprinkle rimmed jars and I also made a vegan chocolate torte. So I am happy to report that dinner at eight was a blessing to our relationship once again and the Lord truly provided for us in really tangible ways. I am looking forward to doing it again next month!

Happy Valentine's Day! I have been busy setting up a little date for Mr. Gough and I for this months Sweetheart Dinner at Eight theme! I am going very simple with the decorations this time but setting up something always makes it so much more special and I am really looking forward to putting the kids to bed early for a quiet night alone!

We are also filling out some store bought Valentines cards for Simon's class tomorrow - I am lame and didn't make handmade but he seems please with his super hero themed cards and I'm also trying to ignore the rest of the house and all of the mess...the farther I get in this fourth pregnancy the less energy I have to do just about anything. I will be back tomorrow with more details from our date - hope your having a wonderful Monday!

beaded heart necklace

I have a little jewelry tutorial to share with you today it's a sweet, simple (don't feel intimidated if you are new to jewelry making it is simple) and fun addition to any outfit during this valentines month that gets us all in the mood for sweethearts and chocolate...a beaded heart necklace.

Supplies:

seed beads in three colors
head pins
wire
jump rings
chain
jewelry tools including round nose pliers and flush cutters

and if you are new to jewelry making familiarize yourself with wire wrapping HERE as you will need to know how to do this.

Simply follow the pattern below and slip the beads onto the headpins.

Wire wrapping at the tops of each row.

When all of your rows of beads are assembled cut a long piece of wire (I used 20 gauge for this) and wire wrap one end then slip the rows of beads on in order with a white bead in between each row and close the opposite end with another wire wrap.

Add some chain with jump rings and viola your done!

Pattern:

row one: 1 black, 2 white, 2 black, 9 white
row two: 1 black, 2 white, 2 black, 4 white, 2 pink, 4 white
row three: 1 black, 2 white, 2 black, 4 white, 4 pink, 3 white
row four: 1 black, 2 white, 2 black, 4 white, 5 pink, 3 white
row five: 1 black, 2 white, 2 black, three white, five pink, five white
row six: 1 black, 2 white, 2 black, 4 white, 5 pink, 3 white
row seven: 1 black, 2 white, 2 black, 4 white, 4 pink, 3 white
row eight: 1 black, 2 white, 2 black, 4 white, 2 pink, 4 white
row nine: 1 black, 2 white, 2 black, 9 white

the time we decided to paint our room

Ha, that sounds so innocent doesn't it...and it really was.

On Friday afternoon Chris and I decided that it would be a great weekend to get to work on finally painting our room. After all nesting is kickin into high gear over here and my back is only gonna hold out for so long.

We cleared out our room, took down the bed and put out the drop cloth before Chris got to work on cutting in the edges. I went out for a lovely little dinner date with my bestie and after getting home late we ended up deciding to camp out (Chris on the couch and me in Simon's bed) since our bed wasn't set up and we wanted to continue working on Saturday.

Hahahaha...oh my gosh. So of course we both end up with little sleep Simon kept waking me up all night he didn't really understand why he was in bed with Levi when he could snuggle Mom in his bed. Apparently Chris was up sick all night too but I didn't know. By the morning we were both feeling pretty ill. And I told Chris I needed to lay down for a little longer. When I woke up Chris was about three shades of green, he had finished the first coat of paint but I could tell that was about all he could handle.

He started puking...

I kicked it into high pregnant hormone driven Mommy gear. My kids were stuck in front of the TV and I was frantically painting because I knew I had to get our bed back in place - poor Chris was so ill he was curled up downstairs sick as a dog. I ran to the drug store for Gatorade and saltines and such and then flew home and frantically painted. Josie was screaming from her crib and the boys were zoning out while Chris was so sick...

Thinking about it now it was actually fairly comical - and thankfully a little voice inside told me to call for help. I hate calling for help but I did it and praise Jesus my Mom and Dad in law came to our aid Saturday evening. (Thank you Steve and Paula so much!) Phew. By Sunday morning the bathrooms had been deep cleaned, sheets all sanitized, the room painted and the kids were with grandma and grandpa and when I opened my eyes I saw the prettiest shade of aqua welcoming me to a brand new day!

It's always something isn't it...but hey at least I can tick painting our room off the list. Now onto painting the bathroom and a few dozen other things before this fourth baby makes his/her debut in only THREE months!! I will give you a tour when I finish decorating our newly painted room I promise!

Wouldn't that be awesome - a no brainer wardrobe. Ugh sometimes I feel like I am in an argument with my closet and the yoga pants usually win. It's gotten pretty ugly for me to be honest. There was that brief moment in time right after baby #2 that I asked my little sister for some advice on what to wear after the guy in the Nordstrom shoe department brought out a pair of hideous loafer man shoes for me to try on because they reminded him of me. ahem. I was 28.

But let's just say being pregnant with #4 isn't really helping me feel super hot and stylish at the moment. So when the most adorable women ever emailed me about her brand new ebook - The No Brainer Wardrobe my ears perked up. This my friends is exciting!

I was so thrilled to get my hands on a copy of Haley's new book. Not only because I know she has impeccable style - (HERE is proof!) but she has the most charming and wonderful way of writing. Very straight forward and so easy to follow. I read the whole thing in it's entirety and already feel super inspired to not only put together some really great inspiration boards but also purge my closet and get to work on making my clothes work for me. There are plenty of great action items to go along with some top notch advice!

(she's a personal stylist too!)

Hayley did not leave anything out either. There are sections on discerning your style, how to build a go-to outfit, taking your inspiration to the thrift store (a personal favorite section!) and shopping maternity too and so much more! This book was so helpful and truly has encouraged me to shop my own closet and figure out what I really love and get rid of the rest so that when I get up in the morning and spend my 2.5 minutes of time getting ready those yoga pants aren't the only things calling my name...(although if you know me in real life and see me in the yoga's maybe don't mention it :))

dinner at eight returns!

It's been a little quieter around here this week than I like. Little miss Josie has been pretty sick (read up every thirty minutes at night kind of sick) and it has turned into Mommy being a bit under the weather too. But have no fear I shall return soon enough. Being pregnant with a baby in arms is exhausting though I will admit...I made it through once having my boys sixteen months apart so I know I can do it again (praying hard and crossing fingers :)) but I am working on taking it one day at a time and offering myself a bit more grace these days...it's so hard isn't it not being able to do everything especially when sickness is involved. sigh.

In the mean time I wanted to mention that I am finally planning to bring the old dinner at eight feature back just in time for Valentines day! I am planning a special little date night at home for me and Mr. Gough and I know many of you have been interested in jumping in to participate too. I wanted to give you a heads up that February I will be hosting a linky party for it and will add it to the dinner at eight page at the beginning of the month. It will be open for the entire month so feel free to link up your date night at any point so that we can all see!

Last years Valentines date was so much fun so I am looking forward to getting the juices flowing again and Chris is excited as well. We had a little household meeting last weekend and got to talking and he mentioned that he really loved those date nights at home...I got the hint ;).

During our little snow-cation I found a bit of time to whip together this simple pixie hat for miss Josie. I made her one just like it when she was a tiny baby but never got around to blogging about it but she really did wear it all of the time.

I was originally inspired by this hat made by the famed Elsie of A Beautiful Mess...although her version is crocheted. I am a little too lazy for that right now but my SIL Jenny has made that version and it is super cute! Instead I just used the basic shape and process but mine basically takes the same amount of time as whipping together a pillow cover or burp cloth - perfect for growing babies and making several in different color combos.

The supplies for the pixie snow hat:

1. A rectangle of cotton fabric (I used a vintage sheet) and a coordinating piece the same size in fleece. You basically need to measure the length of yourself or the person your making it for from jaw bone to jaw bone. Make it wide enough to fit like a bonnet. For Josie my rectangles were 20"x8"

2. Two braided pieces of fabric or yarn for the neck ties.

3. A pom pom (optional)

Step 1: After you cut your rectangles to the desired size sandwich them with right sides facing and pin the braided neck ties into two of the corners to be sewed into the hat tucking the ties inside.

Step 2: Sew around the entire perimeter of the hat leaving about a two inch gap on one of the longer sides - make sure it's the opposite long side to the one holding the neck ties. Trim the excess of the neck tie ends and flip the entire hat right side out.

Step 3: Next your going to make another sandwich flipping the rectangle with right sides together again and sew up the back of the hat.

Step 4: Flip it all with right sides out and sew a cute pom pom on top. Tie it on and enjoy!

(I was so hoping to get to use that title :)) We did end up getting a wonderful dose of snow over this past week and I have been cozy at home with my whole family enjoying the little pause to life that snow around here brings.

Our city is not use to this kind of weather, we have few snow plows and lots of treacherous hills and so when snow and ice hit us we all like to stay put if we can. It felt like such a deep blessing to be able to enjoy the beauty and wonder of white this winter and although thousands are still without power and the meltdown is just now beginning I myself was thankful for the snow!

We will be working on thawing out over the weekend and warming up a bit. I haven't left our house since Monday - and it honestly hasn't bothered me at all (perk of being an extreme introvert I suppose)! I will be back soon with a tutorial to share, I was able to get a wee bit of crafting in and lots of yummy cooking and baking too. Oh snowy winter how I loved you while you lasted!

a snow situation

It only happens like once a year here in the Seattle area...a snow situation.

If you live here you know exactly what I am talking about. The city sits on high alert holding our breath for a few pretty snowflakes and if we are lucky the snow will come.

We have had a little but right now we are hoping for a bit more.

I thought I should let you know about our situation...hopefully tomorrows post will be called snowmageddon :).

Dear baby,

How can it be that in only four short months you will be in our arms?!?! I still can hardly believe some days that I am going to be a Mama to four, FOUR little ones!! You are getting bigger by the day and clearly so am I. I am trying to embrace this season with my whole heart and relish the final weeks of baby bearing because pretty soon it will all be baby rearing and I am sure I will feel so nostalgic towards the months of heartburn and swollen ankles and being round and uncomfortable and oh so pregnant.

Your brothers and sister are anxious to meet you and Daddy and I keep talking about what to name you and how to best prepare for your arrival. I am nervous about it all and so excited too we can't wait to officially bring you home to be a part of our family - you are so loved already keep up the good work of growing!

Over the holidays I picked up several thrifted fair isle sweaters that I had planned to use to make some new stockings for our family. One of them in particular was a sweet little red and purple one that I loved but it was a super tiny baby sweater and was badly moth eaten so not really something that could be worn again and in the end a little to small for a full stocking.

I wanted to use it somehow though because I just loved the print and so I cut it up and set it aside knowing that it would be perfect refashioned as a chunky bangle for the winter months. As luck would have it on Christmas Eve my baby sister Katie gifted me a big chunky hand knit bangle (for the record she hand knitted the big purple one because she has real yarn skills - she always makes such sweet hand knit gifts for us I love it!) and the color matched perfectly to the one sitting on my crafting table at home! It was just enough incentive to finish up the one I had started and I love how it turned out. I thought I would share a little step by step with you today in case you are in the mood to make a stack for the chilly winter months too!

This project is super quick and easy all you need:

old or thrifted sweater
bracelet form
scissors
ruler
needle and yarn or thread

Simply cut a rectangle that is long enough to fit around the bracelet form. Mine was ten inches around the outside and I ended up cutting it down to nine inches to allow for stretch but all sweaters stretch differently so play with the size a bit. and cut it wide enough to allow for sewing down the edges a bit. Again I really just eyeballed this thing and once the rectangle fit pretty well I sewed about 1/4 inch seams on each side and then sewed the whole thing together inside out at each end...make sense?

Then I slipped the sweater over the bracelet...

And used a needle and yarn to hand sew the sweater closed. You could alternately use glue and just glue the sweater down but I wasn't really feeling like fussing with glue on this - if I did use glue I would have used Fabritac my personal favorite!

And that was that, simple and quick a fun little accessory to brighten up these long winter days. Hope you have a wonderful week friends and happy Monday!

January marks the one year anniversary for me here on A Bit of Sunshine and I can really hardly believe it, it has been an incredible year!

I have had so much fun over the past twelve months sharing life with you guys and I thought it would be fun before we get too far into 2012 to spend a bit highlighting a few of my favorite posts from 2011...it was hard to narrow it down but here are my picks:

In January I shared a little before and after of a piano I inherited almost thirty years ago - it's never to late for a good diy! :)

In February Andi and I started the Dinner at Eight project - something that I plan to make a regular thing again in the coming year I am really excited about it!!

In March you guys were gracious enough to let me share my heart with you as our family fell on some hard times, I am so blessed by all of you!

In April we made a bokeh filter that I still use all the time!

In May I shared our nursery tour on Odeedoh it was pretty much a dream come true!

At the end of June we whipped up this easy paint chip banner to get into a patriotic mood for the Fourth of July!

And then in July my daughter Josie discovered just how delicious pickles can be!

In August we made the ombré infinity scarf and t-shirt flower, hands down one of the most popular posts here on the blog this year!

In September I threw a surprise party and you guys helped me celebrate my birthday all day long - so many fun guest posts recapped HERE!

In October my family made new wishes and said goodbye to our beloved home one last time.

In November my sister in law, Kristen and I spent the month capturing our blessings. A ritual we hope to continue again next year as well!

And in December we finally shared about our surprise package coming in May - one of the top events to take place for us in 2012 I am sure!

It really has been such a full and amazing year for me - not all of it has been easy or pretty but I think it is always good to highlight the sunshine whenever you can!

1. What is the name of your blog and the passion behind why you write it?

My blog name is A Full Day. The blog is dedicated to my mama. She's enjoying heaven now, but while she was here she had an email signature that read, "Live Each Day To The Fullest". You can read about her here. In addition to that, the Amplified version of the bible says in John 10:10 "...I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows)." My passion is for women to live full godly lives. The Lord is all for it! I'm passionate about people understanding that Jesus is the only way to live a full life. He provides so much. From salvation to a great pedicure, God's got it covered. The heart behind my blog is to point people to Christ. I love sharing the bible in a practical light. God's Word is alive and affects every part of life, if we let it.

2. A favorite date night memory with your sweetie?

Aw man! What a question! There are so many. One day Shuga Sweetness and I went to a local park and conducted our own photo shoot. We armed ourselves with our camera and clicked away. We took tons of pictures of each other. We've got some awesome pictures from that day. We were like two little kids. It was so much fun. And...IT WAS A FREE DATE. Who doesn't like free? :-)

3. A favorite indulgence?

I'd say it's a toss up between great food and shopping. I love to cook. I like pretty dishes. Food presentation takes eating to another level :-) I just recently made pan-roasted brussel sprouts for the first time. Let the choir sing, "Hallelujah". Oh my...they were sooooo tasty. Yum! On the other hand, I love to shop for pretty things, clothes, shoes, etc. I like being surrounded by beauty. That can be done with flowers, candles, or a big warm sweater. I'll take it all.

4. One way that helps you stay "Joii-full"?

In order for me to be "Joii-full", I must be "Bible-full". Without God's Word, I'm pretty much a mess. Consistency is the key. Sometimes it's quite a challenge, but I'm determined to take a daily dose of the word of God. It works! I've proven it!

5. What is one thing you are striving to do in the new year?

I'm striving to make the promises of God that are found in His word so big in my life, that nothing else is visible. I will plant the seed of God's Word in my heart and watch it grow.

Feeling a little in-between, slowly creeping into this new year slightly melancholy but full of hope. Nursing a sick little baby girl with croup and a fever and tending to my own heart after a full close to the year. Thank you guys for the sweet encouraging words about our son Levi he is doing really perfectly fine...the nightmares have almost stopped for me, amazing how resilient little ones can be leaving Mommy and Daddy a total wreck.

Working on a few posts to share in the coming days but giving myself time to process so for now just a few captures from around our home today.

Oh I had such fun plans for some Christmas posts to share here this week I really did but on Tuesday night as luck would have it our son Levi took a pretty major fall here at home and for about thirty minutes or so my heart about stopped.

I won't go into any sort of gory details but it truly was a moment as a Mother that I will never forget. The sound of terror and the look on my four year old's face as my husband calmly but very strongly agreed that I needed to call 911...

Luckily Levi is going to be completely fine after a long night in the ER and a wonderful plastic surgeon who sewed his sweet and beautiful nose back into place. I am told guys think scars are cool...but wow!

Thank you Lord once again for protecting our family, providing for us and allowing a deep sense of peace and hope that no matter what happens. HE is in control and we can rest in His amazing love for us.

As I sit here just a few days before the close of 2011 I am feeling pretty reflective on all that has taken place for our family. On the surface there has been much hardship and loss. It would be wrong to not admit and grieve over some of the major things that have been taken away. But I am also completely undone by the love God has poured out on our home. We have seen this through loved ones, family and many of you rallying around us, and being the hands and feet of Christ to our family.

And not twelve hours after leaving the ER after one of the most traumatic nights of our life we went downtown Seattle and had the amazing joy and honor of watching our fourth baby on an ultrasound screen thriving perfectly in my womb. I have been told countless times that my body should never be able to carry a child and yet God has chosen to use something imperfect to create something so precious to Him. A new life.

I am clinging to the hope of new life for 2012. I have no idea what is in store and in someways that brings me comfort. I am learning this year that always thinking I know what is in store can really make unforeseen changes difficult. We are so joyful and excited for what is coming next, and we've decided to keep the gender of our "bonus baby" a surprise. It feels like the right thing knowing that the plans are safe in the hands of the one that we call King.

I will be back in the new year my friends. Thank you all for the countless ways you bless me and my family!

Braided Almond Bread :: A Christmas Tradition

I met my husband over a decade ago and there are so many things that stand out in my mind about that special time. I have always been quite the sentimental soul, and so it was a delight to spent time getting to know him, as well as his amazing family, hearing about all the different traditions he grew up with.

One of the most special traditions I soon learned was his Mom's secret recipe for Braided Almond Bread. Made only at Christmas-time, loaf after loaf of this incredible pastry was passed out to loved ones and neighbors and enjoyed with their family over Christmas breakfast each year. The first time I sampled it myself, my sweet husband along with his brother got a hold of the recipe and made a huge braided heart version for me for our first valentines day as a couple. I knew this bread was something special. Something to evoke that strong sense of love and affection. I have enjoyed this almond bread every single Christmas morning since and I can tell you it truly does make our family Christmas complete.

This past week my dear Mother in law, Paula, generously offered up her secrets and I had the great honor of spending an afternoon in her kitchen making almond bread for the first time. I also learned a bit more about her heart through the simple act of loving her family through this tradition that she started over thirty years ago.

The dough is made ahead of time and left to rest in the refrigerator over night (or two) before rolling it out and baking. Paula has learned through trial and error many tips over the years. She almost always makes a double batch and when rolling the dough out leaves any remaining in the fridge to stay cool. The longer you work the pastry the harder it will be to braid effectively later.

When you're ready to bake, roll the dough into roughly a 10"x16" rectangle on a lightly floured surface. Spread evenly half of the can of almond filling leaving a small edge, sprinkle generously with brown sugar then cinnamon and lastly the chopped walnuts.

Roll the pastry into a long tube and carefully pull the edge up and around and finish by turning the roll so the seam is underneath. Slice in half lengthwise and pinch the top end together.

Braid the bread working quickly top over bottom and then transfer to a generously greased cookie sheet. The greased cookie sheet is a real key to keeping the almond filling from sticking badly to the sheet. Bake at 350 degree oven for 35-40 minutes until a soft golden brown.

Remove from oven and slide off of sheet immediately onto a cutting board to cool. At this point you can cut it into serving size slices or package however you choose. Paula has found that this bread freezes wonderfully so after slicing she likes to slide the bread onto a well greased piece of tinfoil and wrap it tightly before transferring to the freezer. It can then easily be reheated in a warm oven when ready to serve.

My prayer as a young Mother would be that I too would be able to foster these sorts of family traditions in my own home. Thank you Paula for taking the time to pass on this heritage to me it was truly a blessing to be loved so well in your kitchen this week! And I know I speak for all of your kids young and old we love enjoying this bread each year on Christmas morning it's such a special tradition!!

Paula's Braided Almond Bread

1 pkg. yeast ( 2 1/4 tsp)
1/4 C. warm water

1/4 C. Milk (room temp)

1           Egg (room temp.)
1/2 C.   Butter (1 cube...soft/room temp.)
2 C.      Bread Flour

Almond Filling (SOLO brand in can)

Brown Sugar

Cinnamon

Chopped Walnuts

Directions:

1. Mix yeast into warm water in mixing bowl.
2. Add milk, egg, butter and flour.
3. Using bread hook, knead until dough cleans bowl.
4. Refrigerate overnight in covered bowl.
5. Roll out on lightly floured surface to approx. 1/4 inch thick rectangle.
6. Spread with 1/2 can of almond filling (not paste), sprinkle brown sugar, cinnamon, then chopped walnuts to cover in proportions that you choose.

7. Roll lengthwise so you have a long narrow roll...then place the end of roll on the work surface...and cut roll in 1/2 lengthwise so you have two long sections that reveal the fillings.
8. Starting at the top...pinch the ends together and then braid the 2 sections together.
9. Spray cookie sheet with non-stick spray. Bake 350 degrees...35-40 minutes until toothpick comes out clean from center of braid.
10. When you remove from oven, quickly slide bread onto a cutting board and slice into serving pieces and then onto serving dish. Clean pan while warm before the filling hardens and is hard to remove.

HINT: If you want to serve the bread later...it freezes great. Spray generously sized piece of heavy aluminum foil with non-stick spray. Then slide sliced almond bread onto it to cool. When completely cooled, fold foil over the top and bottom of bread and then bring up sides of foil and fold them down the center of bread. This way, when reheated...no filling will spill into your oven...and cause a mess. At this point you can freeze or hold over until the next morning. Reheat until bread is warm.

peppermint marshmallows

This season I have especially been loving the peppermint chocolate combination...honestly I enjoy it every single year, it is just so good and so Christmasy! I love to make homemade marshmallows for our mugs of hot chocolate so I thought it would be super fun to try making some peppermint marshmallows this year too. They turned out super yummy and really pretty and it has lead me to experiment with other flavors, but that is for another post. :)

I thought it would be fun to share the recipe this afternoon - these could be a special last minute handmade gift to whip together if your still looking for something to bring to the neighbors or a sweet friend. In fact a dear friend of mine sent me a mug filled with homemade almond flavored marshmallows and cookies earlier in the week and I enjoyed them while wrapping presents. (Thanks Polly!) It really is the perfect little something to bless just about anybody!

Peppermint Marshmallows:

4 envelopes unflavored gelatin (3 tablespoons plus 1 1/2 teaspoons)
3 cups granulated sugar
1 1/4 cups light corn syrup
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 to 1 Tbs peppermint extract (your preference)
confectioners’ sugar

Line the bottom of a 9x13" baking dish with parchment paper and spray with cooking spray, set aside.
Put granulated sugar, corn syrup, salt, and 3/4 cup water into a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil over high heat, stirring to dissolve sugar. Cook, without stirring, until mixture registers 238 degrees on a candy thermometer (soft ball stage).

Meanwhile, put 3/4 cup cold water into the bowl of an electric mixer; sprinkle with gelatin. Let soften 5 minutes. Attach bowl with gelatin to mixer fitted with the whisk attachment. With mixer on low speed, beat hot syrup into gelatin mixture. Gradually raise speed to high; beat until mixture is very stiff, about 10 minutes. Beat in peppermint for another minute.
Pour into prepared dish, and smooth with an offset spatula.

To add the red marbling on top:

Immediately after pouring the marshmallow into the prepared dish dot with 12-15 drops of red food coloring. Use a skewer or chop stick to gently run through the color to make the swirls.

Set aside, uncovered, until firm overnight, cut into pieces using a greased pizza cutter and lots of confectioners' sugar to coat. Store in a Ziploc bag or Tupperware with extra powdered sugar to keep from sticking.

I remember making this tea when I was younger and packaging it in little bags for my friends and teachers at school. It has such a nostalgic smell and taste that always reminds me of Christmas.

Chris loves it too and remembers having it as a child and so I made up a big batch this year and we have been enjoying it for a few weeks now in the evening by the Christmas tree.

This recipe makes enough to package up for friends and neighbors as a simple and inexpensive gift as well as enjoy yourself!

Friendship Tea:

2 Cups powdered orange drink (such as Tang)
1 Cup powdered lemonade
1/2 Cup unsweetened instant tea
1/2 Cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon of cloves (heaping)
1 teaspoon of cinnamon (heaping)

Pour all of the ingredients in a big tupperware, add the lid and shake it up until mixed well. I usually add about two or three heaping spoonfuls of mix to a big mug of hot water but adjust the amount depending on how sweet you like it!

scalloped felt wreath

I have wanted to create one of these for quite a long time. After seeing several around blogesphere Rachel's being my most favorite, I finally had some time to raid my felt stash and get it done. Although I admit it took me several sittings to finish (my biggest tip for crafting with kids: be willing to start something you know you won't finish in the first or second sitting just do a little here and there and eventually it will get done!) i think it was worth it I love how it turned out. The colors are reading a little weird in the photo but it matches the green mirror in our entry.

A tutorial isn't really necessary here but I will list the supplies I used:

- a foam wreath
- five 9x12 sheets of felt I bought mine HERE
- scissors
- fabritac glue or glue gun
- a card stock scallop template (I drew mine by hand)

I will mention that I used almost every square inch of felt from all five colors. And I got about twelve scallops out of each piece by folding each one in half the long way and then doing six scallops per side. I just glued the first one down and then layered each piece until I got back to the start and then tucked the last one under the first one. I finished with a white bow and that was about it!

I am sure this will get some good use for years to come!

Also I wanted to say a HUGE thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of the sweet words and love you guys shared over our big news! I will confess that I was super nervous about posting about it...sometimes posting personal stuff is the hardest because I am not sure if anyone will actually care. (hows that for being vulnerable? :)) You all made me feel so good and your joy is truly helping me get even more excited over having a fourth baby and I am definitely looking forward to sharing more of the experience here too!

You could say we got a little SURPRISE!

I am not sure if I can count this as a make something monday post but I have been dying to share some news with you...I am pregnant. :)

And surprised is right. It was more like shock and aw and wonder at how this could even be possible. This really should not be possible.

Having my fourth baby in five years wasn't exactly on my list of things to do in 2012 but you know sometimes God has much different plans than we do. (duh like our entire life for the past year maybe I should get a clue :))

So if it has seemed like I have been a tiny bit MIA the past month and a half it's honestly because I have felt a little bit like this:

...I said I was being honest.

But we are feeling truly blessed and gearing up for our sweet new addition to join us in early May (36 weeks to avoid some personal complications)! And now that I have hit the second trimester I am praying for less nausea and more energy...baby number four here we come!

a little bit of sparkly snow

I honestly can not believe it is December second. I know you probably feel the same way. I love the Christmas season more than anything and want to savor every single thing I can about the blessing that it is. I want it to go slowly and sweetly and be covered in sparkly snow and twinkle lights. I hate the moments when the holidays become overwhelming. Decorating my home always helps me find the deepest anticipation and I admit that we have already been in heavy decorating mode over here the past week.

This morning I took some time to make a little snow village in my candy jar display in our entryway. I love how it turned out and so do the boys. They were really mesmerized by it to be honest oohing and ahhing over the sparkly snow.

The easiest of projects just some epsom salt poured into my vintage jars and then I added some bottle brush trees, deer and a putz Christmas house too.

Easy and magical are the best kind of projects to do this time of year so it was a perfect pause for me today to thank God for the love He has for us sending us the sweetest gift in his son Jesus.

I have lots of other Christmas projects planned for our weekend and so many more things I am just dying to share with you all too. But now I must take my little ones to yet another doctor appointment. Praying that Josie will miraculously be able to get her cumbersome cast off early - oh that would be the best!

And yesterday after getting the sweetest surprise visit from my bestie Claire when she heard I was sick at home and not at church (she raced over with pumpkin spice :)) I got to sit with my gorgeous sister in laws and mother in law too and sip peppermint mocha's and plan some of our holiday festivities (and had major girl bonding) it was such a gift and now I am feeling all warm and cozy and hopeful for the deep blessing that is the holiday season!

Josie had a little accident

After I posted the photo of my little girl in her new cast a couple of days ago I received so many kind emails asking about how she was doing so I thought I should post a tiny update.

First of all she is going to be totally fine and it could have been so much worse. She took a spill and fractured her tibia and luckily her Daddy has great intuition and just knew he needed to take her to the ER right away. Thankfully she will only need to wear this splint cast for a month or so.

She is starting to get the hang of getting around with it on poor little thing but it is kind of cute no matter how annoying and cumbersome it is.

Thank you to everyone who has been so so kind and caring checking in on her. I will admit we are pretty weary over here and not getting much sleep as she gets use to it especially at night but we do feel blessed that she will heal up in no time - then she will be on to learning how to walk :).

make something monday :: pinterest party

By now I am sure that most of you guys are pretty familiar with Pinterest. If you are not than stop reading and head immediately over HERE and get acquainted with the phenomenon that is pinning favorite images, crafts, recipes really anything you would put on an inspiration board that you find around the web virtually knowing that you will be able to find it again...and you can see what your friends are pinning too! It is the best kind of addiction and I am sure many of you are just as hooked as I am!

My sister in law Jenny is also pretty in love with Pinterest and when she called me a few weeks ago with the brilliant idea to throw a Pinterest Party I was super excited to see what she would come up with. It was so much fun and really the perfect little party to host yourself this holiday season so Jenny was excited to let me share all about it here in hopes that you might want to throw one too!

First things first she sent out an evite to all of her friends (in real life) who are users of Pinterest. After we accepted she created a shared pin board that all of us would be able to use to pin the projects we were thinking of bringing. Jenny asked that each of us would choose a favorite project found via Pinterest or a favorite recipe - this is a tiny sampling of what everyone brought. Check out the full board HERE!

When we arrived there were stations ready for each of us to set up our projects. We were instructed to bring enough to make four of the craft we chose one for yourself and then for three others. Then we all got to draw two projects from a hat (three if you brought a food item) that way it was a lottery choosing who got to do what. We could trade if there was something we really had our eye on and a lot of us brought enough supplies to do some extra so it seemed like everyone there was really excited and happy with what they got to make!

Jenny also provided the supplies for everyone to make and take home one of these t-shirt scarves it was sort of like Christmas to be honest :).

I brought fabric wrapped bangles - a fun and easy diy!

Amazing feather earring demonstration.

A personal favorite project, the yarn wrapped jars and bottles. So festive and easy!!

And all the while we got to snack on yummy treats like the chubby hubby bars, mini pizzas, chicken tortilla soup, bread pudding...everything was wonderful!

It was such a blessing to be with so many wonderful, creative, generous women yesterday. Such a nice little break from the craziness that is my day to day reality with three wild kids. I left with special treasures I had created with friends, a full heart and tons more inspiration to get me into the holiday mood. Thanks Jenny!

I have a festive little tutorial to share with you this morning. Something to get you into the Thanksgiving mood - feather earrings made with suede scraps and chain! The perfect compliment to all things fall, boots, tights, hot apple cider, frosty mornings and pumpkin pie. And they are super easy so you will be able to whip up a pair in no time at all!

For these super simple earrings you will need:

- two colors of suede or leather (felt would work great too!)
- jump rings
- chain
- earwires
- tiny beads or gemstones (totally optional)
- scissors, a nail, hammer and jewelry pliers

1. Simply start by cutting out two feathers from each of the two colors of suede using the feather pattern (below).

2. Lay each set of feathers together and using your nail and hammer (and a cutting board or piece of scrap wood) drill a tiny little hole into the tops.

3. Next add a jump ring to connect the feathers and hang some chain on the front as well using the jewelry pliers.

4. You might need to add a second jump ring to the top depending on how you would like the feathers to hang, attach the earwires and you are pretty much finished and ready to go. If you would like to add the gemstones or beads might I suggest THIS tutorial on wire wrapping techniques - it's pretty much the best!

Make up a bunch and get your Christmas presents finished early or keep them for yourself as a festive treat!

colors of fall

Earlier today the boys and I made these stained glass wax paper leaves. It was fun but I admit that I think I liked it the most. They thought it was super cool to watch the crayons melt into a mess of colors underneath the paper towels but I did most of the cutting. It makes a pretty colorful little window display for the fall though don't you think? (excuse the dirty window please)

I am still taking down halloween and birthday decorations from mondays festivities. I was a mess on tuesday morning when I awoke after the candy coma - worst migraine ever so I laid around most of the day and such has been much of the week...it's friday and there are still things lingering around from it all but I am determined to finally clean it up this weekend and start getting into gear for the holiday season.

It's been such a crazy year I really can not believe it is already november. It is so true what they say about the days being long but the years being short with kids in the house. I am so looking to this holiday season with the kids getting older and getting excited about it all - makes me feel like a kid too.

I will be back later this evening with mine and Kristen's fourth entry in the capturing our blessings project. I am planning to include a linky today for the few who are joining us this month is savoring the sweet snapshots each day, things that we are so grateful for. Last year my Sister in Law, Kristen and I hosted a project called Capturing our Blessings over on the old Ten on Ten blog. The project was simple, we each took one photo a day during the month of November. The idea to capture the moments, the beautiful gifts we have been given, that make our hearts sing with gratitude. We posted them side by side as a diptych and to see how amazing our gifts paralleled each other at times was incredible.

We also invited others to participate with us by posting one wordless photo per day on your own blogs during the month and included a linky each Friday for those who wanted to share their own moments of gratitude as we paused through the special season of Thanksgiving.

Kristen and I have decided to keep that tradition alive this year and will be posting a wordless diptych each evening sharing a sliver of what makes our hearts stir with joy this month. If you would like to join in feel free to post links in the comment section and I will include a linky on Fridays too if you feel lead to share a special moment.

I am so excited to do this again. I loved what we captured last year in fact looking back through the month made me tear up remembering that time with a new baby and the holiday season upon us. Snapshots from Halloween

Just a couple of peeks from the "BOOthday" party we hosted last night to celebrate little Josie and Levi's first and fourth birthdays. It was a blur of frosting and candy and coffee to keep me going. I didn't get a ton of photos but we had a really great time!

Our kids went for a Star Wars theme this year, Levi as Darth Vader, Simon as Luke Skywalker and Josie as Princess Leia. We felt so blessed to have our close friends and family around to celebrate and even though Chris and I realized after we left the house with a ton of kids to trick or treat that neither of our kids were wearing shoes (um where were their parents? :)) we ended the night in a candy coma with happy hearts.

I asked Levi this morning how he felt about his party and this is what he said "when I was there my life was feeling really great!" ha - I loved that response and I couldn't agree more. Looking forward to next years party already!!

And now onto November...the holidays are here!!!

missing mojo + norwegian apple cake

I lost my mojo somewhere between here and the other side of town. Its kind of bugging me too but what on earth can you do when your mojo abandons you? Not a whole lot.

To make matters worse I had a pretty traumatic trip to the fabric store yesterday while in search of said missing mojo and let me tell you, that did NOT help. It was mostly a lot of me being exhausted and scattered coupled with an over tired baby who somehow ate my fabric ticket and two wild boys rough housing in the Halloween aisle...the saleswoman yelled at me and made me search for the ticket. I cried. We went home and I threw the bag of crafting supplies down on the counter and I haven't really felt like touching it.

Truthfully though I just hate those weeks where no matter how much effort I put into creating it just doesn't happen. Nothing excites me or inspires me. We are hosting a birthday Halloween party next week and I don't even have the energy to decorate...oh mojo where are you?

Katie sent me a text earlier asking for my Norwegian apple cake recipe (hi Katie :)) so I thought I would share that with you guys tonight since it is super yummy and I haven't ever posted it before. And it seemed like just the ticket to get me feeling a bit more inspired to create.

I usually make this in an 8" round tin but last time experimented and made mini ones with my muffin tin and since everything is yummier in miniature form they turned out pretty great too! Either way this cake is so delicious, a mix between a cake and a pastry. It's the perfect treat for brunch or dessert.

Norwegian Apple Cake:

(fairly certain this recipe is originally from all buttoned up years and years ago!) 

Sift together:
1 cup plus 2 Tb flour
1t baking powder
1/2 t salt
3/4 cup sugar

Cut in a 1/2 cup margarine or butterIt will look crumbly like pastry dough.

Beat one egg and spread over mixturestirring it up lightly it will still look crumbly though. 

Separately, mix together:
apples peeled and grated
Tb sugar
tsp cinnamon

Spread half of the dough outinto a greased, 8" round cake tin.  Pat into place gently (a fewholes are ok).  Spread apples out on top.  Spoon remaining dough overtop of that evenly there will be a few holes 

Bake at 375 for 45-50min.  Let cool in the pan, and gently turn out.  

Serve with an icing ofpowdered sugar, vanilla and water. Drizzle over the top or alternately with asprinkling of powdered sugar or dollop of whipped cream.

My word I have had a hard time putting together a proper post this week. I do so love this time of year though and have lots to share in due time I promise!

I spotted this amazing little wreath tutorial over at tatertos & jello recently and love it so much - it's so adorable and so accessible I want to make one!! There is always something fun to make if we had endless time and money isn't there. We could all stow away in a craft cottage like little elves and craft our lives away couldn't we but alas there is always something else pulling for our attention.

Last night Chris was tucking the boys in and he made a comment that their room was quite a mess Levi says "yeah I know why don't you pick it up while we are asleep" ha I know what you mean son, I know what you mean :).

saying goodbye

It's been over a week now since we officially closed and moved forward into the next chapter saying goodbye to our home. My heart is still unraveling itself from the finality of it all but it feels good in so many ways to be able to walk away knowing that we are right where God wants us to be.

These are photos of us wrapping up at our first home...it's a long long rather tiedious story but we actually ended the short sale process with two houses in the past two weeks. So many are in the same spot I know right now and although I wish it wasn't the case I am deeply grateful that this two year journey is finally behind us.

We spent time at both homes saying goodbye. Praying for the new owners and bidding adieu to neighbors and friends. Its weird knowing that we can't ever go back onto these properties again. It just feels so strange knowing how many memories were made.

How my water broke five weeks early in this tiny little house and I had to convince Mr. Gough to get his butt in the car because it was game time and no I did not pee my pants :)...the time I lit the bathroom on fire at 1am preparing for my sister in laws bridal shower because I somehow knocked over a candle and it caught the towel...sweat and hard work and the way it smelled like home even from the first time we laid eyes on it.

But I am learning. Everyday Chris comes home from his job at the Union Gospel Mission and tells me of the amazing things he sees God doing in our city. He shares heartbreaking trials and incredible triumph. We've watched a transitional housing development burn to the ground displacing 41 in minutes - babies and mommies and tired fathers with nowhere to go. These stories put my life into perspective and help make it much easier to let go and move forward trusting in God and asking to be apart of His story.

So just like that the tide shifts and things change. And I am proud to say that we weathered many storms this year together as a family coming out strong and happy - and a little bit pooped out :) - but so thankful.

So as a little tribute Heather asked me to share a final home tour on her Home Made Lovely series today. It felt really good to put together some before and after pictures one last time and to thank God for the season that he allowed us to live in that space.

the farm

On Josie's first birthday this past weekend we headed to The Farm. It's a really fun place to visit in the fall if you live anywhere near the Seattle area!

Josie's little friend Juliette who was born on the same day, two doors down was having her birthday party. We ended up making a connection with her family after we realized that Simon was in the same class as Juliette's big sister Savvy (this little friend). We have had fun getting to know them a bit this past year and were honored to be there with them to celebrate. We had a blast enjoying the pumpkin patch, corn and hay mazes, tractor ride, cow train, petting zoo and apple picking. It really was an amazing afternoon!

So have you been to the pumpkin patch yet? It's definitely one of my favorite things about fall!

It is hard to believe that my little pumpkin turned one today. Little miss Jolene Joan-Claire aka Jojo or little Josie Joan.

Josie you have been one of the brightest spots in a year full of trial and change. Your disposition is the sweetest a true third born fitting into this crazy mix with the most amazingly fun and spunky personality! Your brothers love you to pieces and you love them right back with your wildly open opinions and laughter that fills the house with joy. Your the girl my heart longed for and I thank God every single day for honoring that desire and blessing us with you!

Years ago I randomly acquired this recipe out of a book for kids. It was before I had any kids of my own but I was working at a publishing house at the time and often I would flip through books just to see what we carried.

When I saw this recipe I made a photo copy and tucked it away for the future. Chris and I have made this yummy caramel corn many times over the years he especially loves popcorn so this is right up his alley. I also love to make a big batch and surprise him with it!

This year the boys were old enough to get in on the fun. This recipe includes a pretty cool science experiment and is made entirely in the microwave. It takes about ten to fifteen minutes to whip up, no candy thermometer or anything fancy necessary. When you add the baking soda into the sugar mixture there is a fun reaction that had the boys ooing and ahhing!

It felt like the right thing to do to share it today - make this for your family and friends they will love it!

Caramel Corn:

2 12oz bags of microwave popcorn or popcorn made on the stove top or in an air popper
1 stick of butter (I use vegan butter and it works great)
1 C brown sugar
1/4 C light corn syrup
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking soda

Pop popcorn and set aside.

Put the butter, sugar, corn syrup and salt into a microwave safe bowl and heat in microwave until butter melts.

Stir well.

Put back in microwave for about 2 1/2 minutes

Add baking soda to mixture. Stir. Mixture will foam as soda reacts with the ingredients.

Put popped corn into a large brown paper bag (grocery size)

Pour hot mixture over the corn.

Close bag and shake well, evenly coating the popcorn with the caramel mixture.

Put bag back in microwave and heat an additional 1 1/2 minutes.

Allow to cool a bit. Then eat warm or spread in a cake pan to cool.

Enjoy!

this week in no particular order has included - a little clay making session + homemade pumpkin spice syrup + unpacking a few more boxes + lots of yawns from mommy and daddy + bible study and new friends + a few overwhelming moments + bird feeder making at church school + many hours being loved on at children's hospital by a doctor trying to get to the bottom of my oldest sons chronic health issues + vegan oatmeal pumpkin chocolate chip cooking baking + a house that just might actually close tomorrow + being grateful for the beauty in the ups and downs of this life

I am so looking forward to sitting down and sharing more about some of these little peeks but until then am thankful for a full and hopeful week!
